    With its rich history and reputation, Montecristo has become the standard by which all other cigars are judged. The Montecristo brand was created shortly after Alonzo Menéndez purchased the Particulares factory in Cuba.  The name was inspired by Alexandre Dumas' novel The Count of Montecristo.  Menéndez later joined forces with Garcia, and formed a new partnership.  In the early 60's the Montecristo brand and the factory were all nationalized by the Castro government, and Menéndez was forced to relocate moving the operation to Canary Islands.  Due to trademark disputes with Habanos, S.A., the factory was later moved to La Romana, Dominican Republic from which the Montecristo brand was to be released for the the U.S. market.  Due to the embargo the rights to the brand were not recognized under the U.S. law. Menéndez, García, y Cía is now owned by Altadis, S.A., which controls its distribution and marketing in the United States.
